Summary
The fortress of Bednore had been surrendered to General Matthews on 14 February. Tipu Sultan came with an overwhelming body of troops and forced the British to retreat to the citadel. After seventeen days they surrendered and General Matthews and his army were taken into captivity. Mathews was executed on 16 August 1783.
