The station at this town was originally on the on the South Indian Railway metre gauge (MG) 'Villupuram-Nellore Railway connecting through 'Gudur' to Nellore.
In Nov 1899 the 'Gudur-Nellore Section' was taken over by Madras Railway and converted to broad gauge(BG) become part of their 'East Coast Line' from Madras.
From 1 Jan 1908 Madras Railway was absorbed into the newly formed Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway(M&SMR) and the 'Gudur-Nellore Section' became part of their Broad Gauge 'North-East Mainline'
At the same time the SIR lines north of Katpadi wrere given to the M&SMR as part of their Metre Gauge system.
As a consequence 'Gudur' became a significant Interchange between the M&SMR BG and MG networks.
