Kattar Sang to Jugdulluk

This was the sixth day of the Retreat from Kabul to Gandamak. Brigadier Shelton commanded the rearguard under heavy fire on the ten miles from Kattar Sang to Jugdulluk. The diminished force took up defensive positions in some ruins at 3 pm and a message came from Akbar Khan asking for Capt. Skinner. Skinner returned at 5 pm to say that Akbar Khan offered to stop any further massacre and provide supplies if General Elphinstone, Brigadier Shelton and Captain Johnson would attend a conference. Elphinstone saw no alternative and command was handed over to Brigadier Anquetil. The three officers spent the night at Akbar Khan's camp but the force at Jugdulluk had no respite. By then only 150 men of the 44th Regiment, 16 dismounted horse artillerymen and 25 troopers of the 5th Cavalry were left.

  • Dr Duff, Surgeon-General - lagged behind wounded and later found killed
  • Capt. Grant, Asst Adjt-General - jaw broken by a bullet
