Arthur John Barry

Arthur John Barry Lieutenant Colonel (1859-1943) was an English civil engineer and architect of the late 19th and early 20th century.

Railway Achievements in India

• Jubilee Bridge , 1883. Aged 24, engaged by the East India Railway as Chief Engineer in charge of the construction of the Hooghley River Bridge. The bridge was designed by Alexander Meadows Rendel, Consultant Engineer to EIR and Bradford Leslie, the EIR Chief Engineer. The bridge is noteworthy as a cantilever truss bridge, constructed entirely by riveting without the use of nuts or bolts in the construction. The construction started in 1882 and was completed in 1887. The Chief Engineer in charge of construction works was Lt Col Arthur John Barry. The Jubilee Bridge was opened on 16 February 1887 in the fiftieth or jubilee year of the reign of Queen Victoria.
• Bengal-Nagpur Railway. He was the Executive Engineer in charge of the construction of the bridge over the Damuda River and the work of the Damuda district, afterwards Superintending Engineer of the Bengal section.

He returned to England in 1891 and entered into partnership with his uncle Sir John Wolfe-Barry. In 1901 he entered into partnership with Sir Bradford Leslie becoming in 1906 A.J.Barry and Partners.
