Rosa Sugar Factory Tramway from Rosa Town to the Rosa Sugar Factory, a length of 3.25 miles(5.2km) ‘A tramway constructed at the expense of Messrs Carew and Company connects the Rosa Sugar factory with Rosa station on the ‘Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway’(O&RR). This tramway is 3.25 miles long and is worked by cattle power. It is used for goods traffic only’ [1].

Rosa Sugar Factory Tramway

The ‘Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway’ (O&RR) Mainline had reached Shahjahanpur and on to Bareilly in 1873. Rosa Junction is about 3 miles (5km) south-east of Shahjahanpur and where there was an interchange with the Rosa Sugar Factory Tramway, it was a private tramway with a length of 3.25 miles( 5.2km)

A branch from the distillery to the O&RR was first proposed in 1873-74 from a point about halfway between Kanti and Shahjahanpur stations. There are records that indicate rails were ordered in 1874-75 and that later a broad gauge(BG) locomotive was in use [2].

Rosa Sugar Factory

About 1840 sugar refining commenced at the site, in 1847 Russell Carew was employed to modernise the distilling process and shortly after Carew with Messrs Lyall and Bonnie purchased the operation. During the 1857 mutiny the distlliary was looted and destroyed and later rebuilt [2].
in 1857 ‘Carew & Co Ltd’ was established , who also owned the nearby ‘Powayan Light Railway'
The company was renamed ‘Carew Ltd’ in 1992 and still exists today
