- 1761 raised at Chichester as the 98th Regiment of Foot
- 1763 disbanded
2nd Raising
- 1780 raised as the 98th Regiment of Foot
- 1785 disbanded
3rd Raising
- 1804 raised as the 98th Regiment of Foot
- 1816 became 97th Regiment of Foot
- 1818 disbanded
4th Raising
- 1824 raised as the 98th Regiment of Foot
- 1876 renamed 98th (Prince of Wales) Regiment of Foot
- 1881 amalgamated with the 64th Regiment of Foot to become the 2nd Battalion, Prince of Wales's (North Staffordshire) Regiment
- 1920 renamed The North Staffordshire (The Prince of Wales's) Regiment
- 1959 amalgamated to form The Staffordshire Regiment (The Prince of Wales's)
- 2007 amalgamated with the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment and The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment to form The Mercian Regiment, in which the Staffords became the 3rd (Staffordshire) Battalion
Service in British India
- 1781 Bombay
- 1782 2nd Mysore War
- 1783 surrendered at the Battle of Bednore and interned until 1784
