The Vizagapatam-Raipur Railway was surveyed in 1879-82 by Archibald Crellin Cregeen and William Michell for the Government of Madras.

By 1906 the line from Vizagapatam (Vizianagram as became known as) to Raipur had been sanctioned for construction. [1]

However the railway was not constructed until 1931 and became the Raipur-Vizianagram Branch Railway of the Bengal Nagpur Railway [2]
