[xxxxx Karnal]

Karnal was the headquarters of Karnal District in the Delhi Division of Punjab Province during the British period. About 125km north of Delhi, it had a military cantonment which was abandoned in 1841 due to a massive spread of malaria caused by faulty irrigation. Following this, the cantonment at Umballa about 85 km away (north) was built in 1843 as a replacement.

Not to be confused with Kurnool in the Madras Presidency.

Spelling variants
