The 1st Carnatic War was the reflection, on the Indian subcontinent, of the hostilities between the British and the French during the War of Austrian Succession in Europe.

Summary

Rivalry between British and French trading interests on the Coromandel coast was generally peaceful until the outbreak of the War of Austrian Succession. The British captured some French ships, the French captured Madras and the British besieged Pondicherry. The Treaty of Aix-La-Chapelle ended the war in Europe and Madras was returned to the British. From then on the British and French were strong political powers in India.
