The first two regiments of Bengal Regular Cavalry were formed from troops of native cavalry in 1783. By 1842 there were 11 regiments of Bengal Light Cavalry with British officers and Indian troopers. All the regular cavalry regiments were disbanded during theIndian Mutiny.

In addition there were Irregular Cavalry units or Local Horse raised by Europeans on the silladar system. After the Indian Mutiny the irregular cavalry formed the nucleus of the cavalry taken over by the Crown.

See Bengal Army Regiments for a list of articles on individual Bengal Cavalry Regiments.
