Lyallpur was the headquarters of the Lyallpur District, Punjab during the British period. It was named after Sir James Lyall, the Lieutenant-Governor of Punjab. In 1979, it was renamed as Faisalabad in honour of King Faisal of Saudi Arabia who died in 1975.
