Kaunia-Dharlia State Railway, also described in some records as the Kaunia-Kurigram Railway

The ‘Kaunia-Dharlia State’ was constructed by the Eastern Bengal Railway(EBR) as 2ft 6in/762mm narrow gauge(NG) Tram linking Kaunia to the Dharla River [1] [2].

The line interchanged with the metre gauge(MG) ‘Northern Bengal State Railway’(NBSR) at Kaunia+ and ran eastwards to Teesta+ and then to Kurigram and extended to Jatrapur on the banks of the Dharla River . The NG line first opened in 1882, [3] with an estimated length of length of 32 miles(51km).

In 1887, to ensure better management, the NBSR along with Dacca State Railway(DSR) and the narrow gauge(NG) Kaunia-Dharlia State Tram/Railway were amalgamated to form the Eastern Bengal Railway(EBR).

+“Kaunia” is the spelling given in the ‘Imperial Gazetteer’ 1908, the ‘1918 Administration Report’ and modern name. Alternative spelling “Kauniya” is used in the ‘Imperial Gazetteer Railway Map’ 1909

+“Teesta” is the spelling given in the ‘Imperial Gazetteer’ 1908, the ‘Imperial Gazetteer Railway Map’ 1909 and the ‘1918 Administration Report’ and also the modern name which follows the name of the nearby River Teesta. The ‘Imperial Gazetteer’ 1908 gives the alternative “Tista” which is also the modern name

Later History

The line was over by East Bengal Railway(EBR) in 1887.

In 1901 the 17 mile(27km) section from Kaunia to Teesta was converted to metre gauge (MG) becoming part of the ‘Kaunia-Dhubri Section’ of the ‘EBR Metre Gauge Division’ - See separate page [3].

The Teesta to Kurigram section, a length of 15 miles(24km), remained a 2ft 6in/762mm NG line at this time, this section was renamed the ‘Teesta-Kurigram Railway’ - See separate page.

The section from Kurigram to Jatrapur on the banks of the Dharla River was abandoned [3].
