Alleppey Port Tramway,
The development of Alleppey (now called Alappuzha), Travancore State, as a port commenced in 1762 mainly for the export of coir matting and yarn aided by the earlier construction of two canals[1].
In the second half of the 19th century the harbour at Alleppey became the major port for Travancore State. it was used for the export of timber from the State's forests, cardamom, pepper, coir and coconuts and the import of salt, rice and tobacco [2].
A pier was built at some time in the late 19th century that had a hand worked tramway of unknown gauge that linked the pier to the godowns [2].
