History
Originating in the 12th century, the Kingdom of Cochin was the location of the first European settlement in India. In 1500 the Portuguese were welcomed by the king and gave him support against the Zamorin of Calicut. They established themselves at Fort Cochin but were displaced by the Dutch in 1663. Under threat from the Kingdom of Mysore, the Rajah of Cochin entered into a treaty with the British on 6 January 1791. In 1795 The British forces captured Fort Cochin from the Dutch and possession was confirmed by the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1814. In 1809 a second treaty with the Rajah reduced Cochin to a princely state within British India.
