Events in British India
Actions during the wars between the French Revolutionary government and several European states. France declared war on the British and the Dutch on 1 February 1793. In 1795 the French seized the Netherlands and set up the Batavian Republic as a puppet state. To prevent the Dutch colony of Ceylon falling into the hands of French Republicans the British landed forces at Trincomalee in 1795 eventually taking control of all the Dutch settlements on the island.
