General James Stuart (1741–1815) was a British soldier who came to India in 1782 as a major in the 78th Regiment of Foot. He took part in the 2nd Mysore War and the Campaign of 1790 in the 3rd Mysore War. He commanded the Expedition against the Dutch in Ceylon and became Commander-in-Chief of the Madras Presidency in 1796. He commanded the Bombay Army in the 4th Mysore War. As Lieutenant-General he took part in the 2nd Maratha War and returned to Britain in 1805.
