Joseph-François Dupleix
Joseph-François, Marquis Dupleix (1697-1763) was Governor-general of the French East India Company's possessions. His ambition to make France dominant in the subcontinent brought him into conflict with the British in the 1st Carnatic War (1746-48) and the 2nd Carnatic War (1749-54). His great rival was Robert Clive. He fell from favour and was recalled to France where he died in obscurity.
