Malakand Tunnel Construction Tramway

The 'Malakand Tunnel' was constructed by the North West Frontier Province Public Works Department (PWD) between 1910 and 1915. The project was to take the Swat River under the Malakand Pass to create a canal [1][2].

A Construction Tramway, of unknown gauge, was laid at the northern portal by 1914 where loaded wagons were hauled up a 1 in 150 ramp to the spoil heap by a motor driven haulage machine. When the heading had passed the first ventilation shaft, the ventilation was so good that a steam locomotive was used with no problems from fumes or smoke. At the southern portal loaded wagons were pushed by hand as the grade was a descending one [2].
