Nellore District Forestry Tramways
There were two 2ft/610mm narrow gauge(NG) tramways serving the forestry operations in this district:-
- Tamenapatnam Casuaurina Plantation, used along the seashore within a distance of one to three miles of the Buckingham Canal, initially laid in 1885-86 and by 1902 had 4 miles(13km) of track.
- Sriharikota Island, a barrier island that separates Pulicat Lake from the Bay of Bengal, initially laid in 1889-90 and by 1902 had 5.5 miles(9km) of track [1].
Both the tramways were NG 'John Fowler' portable tramway lines and mainly on the level except at sand dunes where the gradient could be as high as 1 in 12 [1].
Nine miles(14km) of new track was obtained in 1929-31, there is no mention of either system after the 1935-36 annual report [1].
