This was followed by an international force, under [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Gaselee Lieutenant-General Alfred Gaselee], called the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eight-Nation_Alliance Eight-Nation Alliance] which raised the legation siege and occupied [[Peking]]. The Qing government was forced to sign the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxer_Protocol Boxer Protocol] in September 1901 and pay a huge indemnity to the allied powers.
