C 1685 Kaempfer joined the fleet of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the Persian Gulf as chief surgeon and in September 1689, arrived in Batavia. In May 1690 he set out for Japan as physician to the VOC trading post in Nagasaki. He was also the author of ''Amoenitatum exoticarum'' (Latin language) concerning Japan, published 1712 in (modern) Germany.
