Umaria Coalfield Railway
The Umaria Colliery opened in 1883-84 and initially operated by Central Provinces Government until 1897 when taken over by Rewah State (A Pricely State of the Central India Agency [1].
Umaria Coalfield Railway, a broad gauge(BG) line was a opened in 1886-87 and was accorded priority in construction in order to connect Umaria Coalfield to the railway system at Katni [2] . The line was part of Katni-Umaria Provincial State Railway which was a section of the Bilaspur-Etawa Provincial State Railway. The Bilaspur-Etawa Provincial State Railway was absorbed by the Bengal Nagpur Railway(BNR) on 1st January 1888.
Katni was a major transport hub with broad gauge(BG) lines via the East Indian Railway(EIR) to north to Allahabad; south to Jubblepore and westward by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway(GIPR). Thus Umaria Coal could be distributed across the country.
Umaria Coalfield Tramways a ¼ mile(400 metre) section of tramway of unknown gauge was supplied in 1889 and by 1897 a scheme was proposed for the development of the colliery in which it was decided to expand the areas underground where tramways were laid and to purchase 500 coal bubs for three areas of the mines [1]. No further information has been found
