- 1777 raised in Tiruchirapalli as 20th Carnatic Battalion from 1st, 3rd, 8th and 16th Carnatic Battalions
- 1784 became 20th Madras Battalion
- 1796 became 2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry
- 1824 became 19th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry
- 1885 became 19th Madras Infantry
- 1903 became 79th Carnatic Infantry
- 1922 became 3rd/3rd Madras Regiment
- 1922 disbanded and re-raised as a Territorial Battalion
- 1941, September converted to a Regular Battalion
- 1947 allocated to India on Partition
