The Umaria Colliery opened in 1883-84 and initially operated by Central Provinces Government until 1897 when taken over by Rewah State (A Pricely State of the Central India Agency [1].
Umaria Coalfield Railway, a broad gauge(BG) line was a opened in 1886-87 and was accorded priority in construction in order to connect Umaria Coalfield to the railway system at Katni [2] . The line was part of Katni-Umaria Provincial State Railway which was a section of the Bilaspur-Etawa Provincial State Railway. The Bilaspur-Etawa Provincial State Railway was absorbed by the Bengal Nagpur Railway(BNR) on 1st January 1888.
Katni was a major transport hub with broad gauge(BG) lines via the East Indian Railway(EIR) to north to Allahabad; south to Jubblepore and westward by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway(GIPR). Thus Umaria Coal could be distributed across the country.
