Everard Richard Calthrop(1857-1927) was a notable British railway engineer. He was particularly involved in the construction of 2ft 6in/762mm narrow gauge(NG) railways and especially prominent in India.

Railway Achievements in India

  • 1882; Great Indian Peninsula Railway(GIPR), Locomotive Inspector
  • 1886; Proposals and surveys, on behalf of GIPR, of Nasik Tramways and Barsi Light Railway
  • 1887; Registration in London of the Indian Railways Feeder Lines Company to promote the construction of NG lines in India.
  • 1889; Resigned from GIPR and, acting as consulant, supervised the construction of the NG horse-powered Nasik Tramways, using his previous survey
  • 1895; He formed a new company to construct the Barsi Light Railway(BLR) based on many inovative designs, the line opened in 1897.
