Following the arrival of the [[Sittang Valley State Railway]] at Mandalay, construction began on a new line from [[Sagaing]] to [[Myitkyina]], opened by 1898 <ref name=name/>.

The Mu Valley State Railway (MVSR) was the third metre gauge (MG) railway to be constructed in Burma. The first being the Irrawaddy Valley State Railway (IVSR), which had opened in 1877; followed by the Sittang Valley State Railway (SVSR) which finally reached Mandalay in 1889.
