The Mu Valley State Railway (MVSR) was the third metre gauge (MG) railway to be constructed in Burma. The first being the Irrawaddy Valley State Railway (IVSR), which had opened in 1877; followed by the Sittang Valley State Railway (SVSR) which finally reached Mandalay in 1889.

The MVSR, shown in Blue on map, from Sagaing, on the opposite bank of the Irrawaddy River facing Mandalay, the line opened in stages reaching Wuntho, 152 miles(244km) in 1892 and onward via Na Bar (Naba) and Mohnyin reaching Mogung, total 294 miles(473km) in March 1896. From Na Bar (Naba/Nada) a short 15 mile(24km) branch to Katha opened in Oct 1895. The final 37 miles(60km) onward to Myitkyina was under construction when the IVSR was transferred to the Burma Railway Company in 1896 [1]

In 1896, management of the MVSR passed to the newly formed Burma Railway Company. [2]

Personnel

Although there do not appear to be any MVSR staff records held in the India Office Records at the British Library, the names of staff transferred to the successor company may appear in Burma Railway records.

However the following staff have been identified from other sources:-
