Bowringpet, named after an officer working in the Kolar Gold Fields, was originally called Maramootlu; it has since been renamed Bangarapet. The town was a junction on the broad gauge Madras Railway for the Kolar Gold Fields Railway, as well as a terminus of the narrow gauge Bowringpet-Chikballapur Railway.
