Synopsis
The naval engagement took place on 10 August when the French were forced to retire to Pondicherry. Sir Edward Vernon came up to Pondicherry on 21 August but contrary winds prevented the fleets from engaging. M. Tronjolly sailed for Mauritius during the night leaving the British blockading the town.
General Munro arrived at Pondicherry on 8 August but was not in a position to bombard the town until 18 September. In the middle of October the garrison surrendered.
