General Sir Hugh Henry Gough VC, GCB (1833–1909) was the grandson of Viscount Gough and brother of Charles Gough. He was born in Calcutta and entered the army in 1853 as a cornet in the 3rd Bengal Cavalry. In the Indian Mutiny in 1857 he was made adjutant of Hodson's Horse and was at the Siege of Delhi and won a VC at the First Lucknow Relief. He also took part in the Recapture of Lucknow. He joined the 19th Hussars and then was commandant of the 12th Bengal Cavalry in the Abyssinian Campaign. He commanded the Cavalry Brigade on the march from Kabul to Kandahar in the 2nd Afghan War. He was promoted general in 1894.
