How to interpret this infobox

The Bhopal-Itarsi Railway comprised two sections:-

  • The longer section was an Indian States Railway, the Bhopal State Railway, opened 1884.
  • The shorter section was classified as a State Railway and opened in 1885.

Together they formed the Bhopal-Itarsi Railway a broad gauge(BG) line linking Bhopal and Itarsi.

Initially worked by Indian Midland Railway(IMR) and amalgamated into Great Indian Peninsula Railway(GIPR) in 1900. [1]

Records

Refer to FIBIS Fact File #4: “Research sources for Indian Railways, 1845-1947” - available from the Fibis shop. This Fact File contains invaluable advice on 'Researching ancestors in the UK records of Indian Railways' with particular reference to the India Office Records (IOR) held at the British Library

An on-line search of the IOR records relating to this railway [2] gives 9 references, all relating to Bhopal State Railway and Indiand Midland Railway.

The most important being:-

  • L/F/8/14/988 “The Indian Midland Railway Company Limited, Contract for the maintenance and working of Bhopal State Railway; 1894 supplemental to the contract of 1885.”

No records are found for Bhopal-Itsari Railway but from 1990 the railway was amalgamated into the GIPR becoming a State Railway. For employment records a search of the following may yield a result -

  • L/F/8/1-20 "Appointments to State Railways made in the UK 1855-1946"
  • Z/L/F/8/1-2 Index to Appointments to State Railways made in the UK 1855-1946"
