The Mu Valley State Railway (MVSR) was the third metre gauge (MG) railway to be constructed in Burma.
The first being the Irrawaddy Valley State Railway (IVSR), which had opened in 1877; followed by the Sittang Valley State Railway (SVSR) which finally reached Mandalay in 1889.

The MVSR, shown in Blue on map, from Sagaing, on the opposite bank of the Irrawaddy River facing Mandalay, the line opened in stages reaching Wuntho, 152 miles(244km) in 1892 and onward via Nada (Na Bar) and Mohnyin reaching Mogung, total 294 miles(473km) in March 1896.
From Nada (Na Bar) a short 15 mile(24km) branch to Katha opened in Oct 1895. [1]
