The Indian Tramway Company (ITC) was formed in 1862 to build short Tramway lines around Madras, with a 20-year subsidy from the Government of India but with no Guarantee.

The ITC constructed the ‘Arakkonam-Conjeevaram Tramway’, a 3 feet 6 inches(1067mm) Rail Gauge line which "opened for traffic about 1 Aug 1865" [1]

The Tramway ran between the towns of Arkonam and Conjeeveram, a line length of 18.8miles (30.3km)
See separate page ‘Arakkonam-Conjeeveram Tramway’ for further information

Arakkonam-Conjeeveram Tramway constructed by Indian Tramway Co.

The Record [1] shows that this was the only line constructed by the ITC, except for a "provisional contract with the French Government for making a railway from Pondicheri".

From 1 Jan 1868 there was a temporary Guarantee issued by the Government of India of 3% of the paid-up capital of £100,000.

The ITC suffered losses and on 20 Dec 1869 went into voluntary liquidation.
The lines were taken over by the ‘Carnatic Railway Company’ , a new company formed on 1 March 1870 for the purpose.
See separate page ‘ Carnatic Railway Company’ for further information

Later History

In 1872, the Carnatic Railway merged with the Great Southern of India Railway.
In 1874, the merged companies were renamed the South Indian Railway(SIR).
