The Sangli State Railway was opened in 1907 as a short 5 mile(8km) link from Miraj Junction on the Southern Mahratta Railway(SMR) network to Sangli. With the opening of the railway Sangli became an important trading centre. [1]

The line was worked by SMR; which became Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway(M&MSR) in 1908.
