The Pondicherry Branch, 16½ miles(26km), was a branch from the South Indian Railway metre gauge (MG) 'Madras-Tuticorin Mainline' at Villupuram to 'the Gingee River, inclusive of the bridge over the river'[1].
The branch line connected to the French enclave of Pondicherry with the rest of British India. The branchline ran from Villupuram to the Gingee River bridge where in met the Pondicherry Railway[2]
The Pondicherry Railway was constructed under the supervision of the SIR and commenced in 1878 simultaneously with the SIR 'Pondicherry Branch'.
The branch line, comprising the two sections, opened in 1879 by SIR under a joint working agreement.
