Summary

At the beginning of January 1760 both the British and French were negotiating for support from the Mahrattas. A large force of Mahratta cavalry joined the French on 10 January and Comte de Lally divided his army into two columns. One under Marquis de Bussy-Castelnau remained at Trivatore while Lally marched with 1,000 men to Conjeeveram where Lieutenant Chisholm commanded the garrison. Eyre Coote hurried to confront him but on arrival found that de Lally had plundered the market and left again. On 14 January de Lally left Trivatore for Wandiwash where he laid siege to the fort which was garrisoned by 30 Europeans and 300 sepoys under captain Sherlock. Eyre Coote reached Wandiwash on 22 January and moved to attack the French. The British gained a decisive victory and de Lally was forced to retreat to Pondicherry. Major Brereton was killed in the action.
