General Sir Charles John Stanley Gough VC, GCB (1832–1912) was the grandson of Viscount Gough and brother of Hugh Gough. He was born in Chittagong and entered the army in 1848 as a cornet in the 8th Bengal Light Cavalry. He served in the Corps of Guides and then Hodson's Horse during the Indian Mutiny and won a VC for gallantry on four separate occasions. After brief service in the 19th Hussars he was given command of the 5th Bengal European Light Cavalry. He took part in the Duar War and the 2nd Afghan War where he commanded a brigade. He then commanded the Hyderabad Contingent and was promoted to general in 1894. He retired to Ireland.
