How to interpret this infobox

The Indian Tramway Company (ITC) was formed in 1862 to build short lines around Madras, with a 20-year subsidy from the Government of India but no guarantee.

The ITC absorbed the Arakkonam-Conjeevaram Tramway which opened in 1865, a 3'6" gauge line converted to metre gauge(MG) in 1878 and undertaken by Carnatic Railway

History

The ITC suffered losses and in 1870 went into liquidation. The lines were taken over by the Carnatic Railway Company, a new company formed for the purpose.

In 1872, the Carnatic Railway merged with the Great Southern of India Railway.

In 1874, the merged companies were renamed the South Indian Railway(SIR).

Records

Refer to FIBIS Fact File #4: “Research sources for Indian Railways, 1845-1947” - available from the Fibis shop. This Fact File contains invaluable advice on 'Researching ancestors in the UK records of Indian Railways' with particular reference to the India Office Records (IOR) held at the British Library

An on-line search of the IOR records relating to this railway [1] gives the following: -

  • L /F/8/11/876 “Indian Tramway Company, Duplicate deed of surrender of existing railway and determining existing contract; 1870”

Unfortunately, there are no ITC staff records held in the India Office Records at the British Library.
