The 'Lala Musa - Mayo Salt Mine Railway' was a metre gauge(MG) Branch line constructed by the Punjab Northern State Railway(PNSR). In August 1878 orders were received to proceed with the works of this line on a project which had been prepared in the year 1872 [1].

Lala Musa was a station on the PNSR which from 1873 then had become a broad gauge (BG) railway. The Khewra Salt Mine, was also known as Mayo Salt Mine, in honour of Lord Mayo, who visited it as Viceroy of India. [2].

The line from Lala Musa to Malakwal opened in 1880, 37 miles(59 km) as MG and converted to BG on 10 Feb 1886 to become part of the North Western Railway NWR Sind-Sagar Line [3].

From Malakwal to the Mayo/Khewra Salt Mine the 15 mile(24km) MG line opened in 1880-82 and converted to BG on 15 Aug 1887 as part of the North Western Railway NWR Dandot Branch [4].
