• 1685 raised as the Duke of Somerset's Regiment of Dragoons
• 1694 renamed The Queen Consort's Own Regiment of Dragoons
• 1714 renamed The King's Regiment of Dragoons
• 1751 renamed the 3rd (King's Own) Regiment of Dragoons
• 1818 renamed 3rd (The King's Own) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons
• 1861 renamed the 3rd (The King's Own) Hussars
• 1921 renamed the 3rd The King's Own Hussars
• 1958 amalgamated with 7th Queen's Own Hussars to form The Queen's Own Hussars

• Cavalry Experiences and Leaves from My Journal by Colonel H A Ouvry 1892 Archive.org. The author arrived in India in late 1846 to join the 3rd Light Dragoons, where he took part in the 2nd Sikh War and remained with the regiment until they returned to England. C 1854, he could not afford to remain in England and exchanged into the 9th Lancers, arriving back at Umballa in 1855 (page 99) and took part in the Indian Mutiny. He returned to England in 1859.
