Brigadier William Beatson was commander of the Nizam of Hyderabad's cavalry which was part of the Hyderabad Contingent consisting of 9,000 cavalry and 6,000 infantry under British officers. He was responsible for the suppression of rebellions by Rohilla & Arab insurgents in Berar. At Dharoor Fort 141 prisoners including 127 Afghans had overpowered the Nizam's garrison and taken possession. Beaston's force laid siege, breached the walls and obtained their surrender.
