Chunar is situated on the right bank of the Ganges, approximately twenty five miles to the west of Benares (Varanasi) (ie upriver) and was on the East Indian Railway. The historic Chunar Fort is located here.
C 1834 it was the one of the four locations of invalided European Veterans in Bengal (the others being Buxar, Monghyr and Moorshedabad.) These men probably belonged to a Veterans' Battalion, similar to the Carnatic European Veteran Battalion in Madras Presidency.
