This event is part of the Mesopotamia Campaign in the First World War

Synopsis

General Gorringe was replaced by General Maude and the British began an advance towards Baghdad. An attack on the enemy on both banks of the Tigris was made on 13 December 1916 and it took two months to overcome resistance below Kut. The assault on Kut on 23 February was successful but the Turks withdrew in good order.
