The Bhavnagar State Railway (BSR) was formed and built by the Princely Bhavnagar State as a Metre Gauge(MG) railway. The line, which opened in 1880, joined with the Gondal State Railway and connected Bhavnager to Wadwhan, a length of 121 miles(195km).

The 'Bhavnagar-Gondal State Railway' became an administative coalition between 'Bhavnagar State Railway' and '[Gondal Railway|Gondal State Railway]' and was formed in 1881.

This railway was also described as the 'Kathiawar Railway', the 'Kathiawar Union Railway' and the 'the 'Kathiawar State Railway' - see separate page
