As the First World War progressed more troops were needed for the Western Front. To meet this demand Expeditionary Force A from India was sent to reinforce the British Troops – particularly in France.
Includes southern Borneo. (For the former British North Borneo, see Malaysia).

Many men who fell during these campaigns are honoured by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.  Amongst these are 4,742 soldiers from India whose names are recorded on the Neuve Chapelle Memorial in France. In 1964 these names were expanded to also commemorate 210 servicemen of India whose graves at Zehrensdorf  Indian Cemetery in East Germany could not be maintained.
Indonesia was formerly known as the Dutch East Indies, and was generally under Dutch control.

In 1811, the island of Java was captured by the Madras Army of the East india Company, see Java Expedition and Sir Stamford Raffles was appointed as the island's Governor. In 1814, Java was returned to the Dutch under the terms of the Treaty of Paris, but the British retained at least some control until 1816.

:Justin Corfield’s book incorporates  some of, perhaps the English language burial entries of, three of the four volumes of the book by P.C. Bloys van Treslong Prins, Genealogische en heraldische gedenkwaardigheden betreffende Europeanen op Java, [Genealogical and heraldic memorabilia relating to Europeans in Java] published 1934-1939, but not Volume 4, published in Batavia in 1939 and not widely available due to WW2. Volume 4 appears to be available at the British Library, UIN: BLL01002992238 (note the BL appears to be missing Volume 3), and Volume 4 was also included, together with the first three volumes, in the USB stick mentioned below from IGV (Dutch language), but  none of the volumes seem to be included with the listing current 7 February 2023. Note that the FamilySearch catalogue, see following,  states that the information has been "transcribed from gravestones", but it appears additional sources have been included.
*The  FamilySearch catalogue of microfilms/digitised microfilms includes the following
**"Genealogische en heraldische gedenkwaardigheden betreffende Europeanen op Java" (stated to be "Genealogical and heraldic information transcribed from gravestones in European cemeteries in Java") catalogue entry Volumes 1-3 of the book by P. C. Bloys van Treslong Prins, mentioned above. Note these have been digitised and are currently (2021/04/06) available to view on your home computer, but you must be signed in to FamilySearch. The three volumes are the first three items on the film. Mainly Dutch language, although if the cemetery inscriptions were originally in English, the transcriptions also are in English. Each volume contains an index of names which appears at the beginning of each filmed volume (although from the page numbering probably comes from the back of the book).  Volume 1 1934. Volume 2 (1936) commences image no. 258, and Volume 3 (1938) commences image 516, ending image 773. There are generally two printed pages per image. The FamilySearch microfilm does  not include Volume 4 (1939)  which is however available at the British Library, or  was available on a USB stick  to buy from  IGV, but may not be included now,  see below. The impression (subject to language difficulties) is that each additional volume contains new information which has become available since the previous edition.

Revision as of 05:03, 4 July 2024

Includes southern Borneo. (For the former British North Borneo, see Malaysia).

Indonesia was formerly known as the Dutch East Indies, and was generally under Dutch control.

However the East India Company had some involvement as Bencoolen on the southside of the island of Sumatra, was occupied by the East India Company from 1685 to 1825, when it was exchanged with the Dutch for Malacca which was more strategically useful.

BACSA have put indexes to the majority of their cemetery books online and these indexes are free to search and browse, see the BACSA Fibiwiki page. If an indexed name is of interest then application can be made to BACSA for details of the relevant burial inscription - charges apply for this service.
Justin Corfield’s book incorporates some of, perhaps the English language burial entries of, three of the four volumes of the book by P.C. Volume 4 appears to be available at the British Library, UIN: BLL01002992238 (note the BL appears to be missing Volume 3), and Volume 4 'was also included, together with the first three volumes, in the USB stick mentioned below from IGV (Dutch language), but none of the volumes seem to be included with the listing current 7 February 2023. Note that the FamilySearch catalogue, see following, states that the information has been "transcribed from gravestones", but it appears additional sources have been included.
  • The FamilySearch catalogue of microfilms/digitised microfilms includes the following
    • "Genealogische en heraldische gedenkwaardigheden betreffende Europeanen op Java" (stated to be "Genealogical and heraldic information transcribed from gravestones in European cemeteries in Java") catalogue entry Volumes 1-3 of the book by P.
    • "Extracts from St. Andrew's Outlook, quarterly messenger of the Presbyterian Churches in Malaya, Sumatra, Burma and Siam : marriages and deaths, March 1914 - July 1951" catalogue entry film 87992.
    • Search the Family Search Catalog for the country Indonesia. Most of the English records originate from either The National Archives at Kew, or the India Office Records at the British Library and are available elsewhere online, see General Register Office (UK) and Findmypast. The Dutch records include
Registers van de Burgerlijke Administratie, 1772-1806 Civil marriages and deaths of Batavia (now Jakarta), Indonesia
Kerkelijke registers, 1808-1828 Roman Catholic parish registers of Batavia (now Jakarta), Indonesia.
Kerkelijke registers, 1746-1855 Lutheran Church registers of Batavia (now Jakarta), Indonesia.

Text in Dutch. Records from Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie (Nederland)
Catatan sipil, Jakarta, Indonesia, 1829-1945 Births, marriages, deaths and recognitions of illegitimate children for Jakarta (formerly Batavia), Indonesia. From records at the Civil Registry Office, Jakarta.

Indische testamenten, 1700-1800 Wills of the Netherlands East-Indies. Available on home computers provided you are signed in to FamilySearch.
There are also some records for Indonesia in the "World Miscellaneous" records on FamilySearch. The source of these records is unknown. Search FamilySearch for the three collections for births, marriages and deaths.
  • For online editions of the publication The Directory & Chronicle for China, Japan, Corea, Indo-China, Straits Settlements, Malay States, Siam, Netherlands India, Borneo, the Philippines, &c, and similar publications, which may contain birth, marriage and death notices, see the Fibiwiki page China.
  • The London and China Express, published in London, with target readership those outside the Indian Empire, including Java, is available on Findmypast, category "Newspapers & periodicals"/"British newspapers", with the same contents also available on the British Newspaper Archive, both pay websites. The date range is from November 25, 1858 to July 2, 1931. For more details see Newspapers and journals online.
  • British & Indian Armies in the East Indies (1685-1935) by Alan Harfield 1984 is available at the British Library, UIN: BLL01012321679 and UIN: BLL01012672115 . • Indische Genealogische Vereniging IGV or Dutch Indies Genealogical Association. Members have exclusive access to the Indisch Archief , a professional database with more than 2 million records with data that are not all publicly accessible. IGV also sells publications, including a USB stick of records from multiple sources. All four volumes of the book by Bloys van Treslong Prins, refer above, were previously included, but appear to have been deleted from the listing dated 7 February 2023. Please clarify with IGV if this is relevant for you. Note both the USB stick and the webpage describing the USB stick, are in Dutch. If the webpage does not display the contents of the USB stick, click on Beschrijving.
Previously the content of the USB stick just described was available on two separate USB sticks which could be bought separately, but this option no longer seems to applies. Note that there is a 50% discount for IGV members, so it would be cheaper to become a digital IGV member if you want to purchase the USB stick.
