After the victory at the [[Battle of Koonch]], [[Hugh Rose|Sir Hugh Rose]] advanced towards [[Kalpi]]. The rebels under [[Rani Lakshmibai]], reinforced by Rao Sahib (nephew of Nana Sahib) and the Rajah of Banda, attacked the British across deep ravines in 40° heat south east of the town. They were forced to retreat however and the town and fort, which were found deserted, were overrun and looted.
