Summary
Following the defeat of Nana Sahib at the Second Lucknow Relief in November 1857 and the defeat of Tatya Tope at the second Battle of Cawpore in December, forces were raised to pursue the rebels north of the Gogra River. Colonel Francis Rowcroft took command of the Sarun Field Force and, together with the Naval Brigade from HMS Pearl under Captain Edward Sotheby RN, won a series of victories between November 1857 and November 1858. James Hope Grant took command of the trans-Gogra force, crossing the river in November 1858 and running to earth the last remaining bodies of rebels.
