This was an event during the 1st Afghan War

Summary

The Government in Calcutta on advice from the Envoy in Kabul decided to reduce the payments made to the tribes to keep the passes from Peshawar to Kabul open. This caused the eastern Ghilzai tribes to block the passes cutting the route to India. Maj-Gen Robert Sale was to march to winter quarters in Jalalabad clearing the opposition on the way. On 9 October 1841 an advance party of 35th Native Infantry under Col. Thomas Monteath left for Bootkhak followed by the 13th Foot on 11 October. Gen. Sale took the whole force forward in stages fighting actions at Boothak, Tezin and Jugdulluk and sustaining considerable losses. He reached Jalalabad on 12 November where he was to remain besieged until April 1842.
