The Lucknow-Bareilly State Railway (LBSR) was a metre gauge(MG) railway which formed an alternative northern "loop" between the cities of Lucknow and Bareilly to the broad gauge(BG) main line of the Oudh and Rohilkhand Railway.
The Rohilkund and Kumaon Railway(R&KR) worked the LBSR. The R&KR was also a MG railway, and together with the NG Powayan Light Railway, the three railways were worked using shared facilities but retaining separate identities.
History
The LBSR was formed in 1891 from merger of Lucknow-Sitapur & Bareilly Railway and Bareilly-Pilibheet Provincial State Railway; worked by Rohilkund and Kumaon Railway(R&KR) [1] [2].
The LBSR expanded from 237 miles(379km) in 1905 to 312 miles(499km) in 1918 and worked as part of the R&KR system [2].
The LBSR was amalgamated in 1943 with the Bengal and North-Western Railway(B&NWR) and the Rohilkund and Kumaon Railway (R&KR) to form the Oudh and Tirhut Railway(O&TR). [3]

- Lucknow-Bareilly LBSR Mainline, opened in stages 1884-91; Lucknow via Sitapur, Mailani ( Lakimpur and Gola Gokaran Nath), Pilibhit, Bhojeepura to Bareilly. Total length 198 miles( 317km) [2]
- ‘Bareilly Grain Siding Branch Line’, opened 1894, 1.75 miles (2.8km) [2]
- ‘Miailani-Sonaripur Branch’, opened 1893-94, 31 miles(49km) .This line ran from Mailani through the forest to Marauncha Ghat on the River Sarda, which is crossed by a temporary bridge to Sonaripur [4].
- ‘Kaurialaghat Extension Line’ a further extension of the ’Miailani-Sonaripur Branch’ (see above) reaching Kaurialaghat in 1911, an additional 20 miles(33km) [2].

Lines Surveyed/Proposed by R&KR as Agent
- ‘Dudhwa Branch Extension’ and ‘Ramnager Ghat Extension’, first proposed in 1895 by as a branch of the LBSR as a ‘forest siding which could be extended gradually as the forests were opened out and their produce made available to the public’. The Agent, the R&KR, had proposed for development as part- of R&KR system. The line when complete would be c.26 miles. The first section was opened in 1903 from Dudhwa to the Mahan River as the ‘Chandon Chok Extension Line’ (see above) [5]. The remaining 20 miles,‘Sonaripur-Ramnager Ghat Extension Line’ , was still pending in 1906 [5]. There is no evidence this Extension was completed.
