Indonesia

Includes southern Borneo. (For the former British North Borneo, see Malaysia).

Indonesia was formerly known as the Dutch East Indies, and was generally under Dutch control.

However the East India Company had some involvement as Bencoolen on the southside of the island of Sumatra, was occupied by the East India Company from 1685 to 1825, when it was exchanged with the Dutch for Malacca which was more strategically useful.

In 1811, the island of Java was captured by the Madras Army of the East india Company, see Java Expedition and Sir Stamford Raffles was appointed as the island's Governor. In 1814, Java was returned to the Dutch under the terms of the Treaty of Paris, but the British retained at least some control until 1816.

Justin Corfield’s book incorporates some of, perhaps the English language burial entries of, three of the four volumes of the book by P.C. Bloys van Treslong Prins, Genealogische en heraldische gedenkwaardigheden betreffende Europeanen op Java, [Genealogical and heraldic memorabilia relating to Europeans in Java] published 1934-1939, but not Volume 4, published in Batavia in 1939 and not widely available due to WW2. Volume 4 appears to be available at the British Library, UIN: BLL01002992238 (note the BL appears to be missing Volume 3), and Volume 4 was also included, together with the first three volumes, in the USB stick mentioned below from IGV (Dutch language), and are thought to be still available but catalogued somewhat obscurely in the listing current 7 February 2023. Note that the FamilySearch catalogue, see following, states that the information has been "transcribed from gravestones", but it appears additional sources have been included.

C. Bloys van Treslong Prins, mentioned above. Note these have been digitised and are currently (2021/04/06) available to view on your home computer, but you must be signed in to FamilySearch. This film DGS 7821578 may also be located through FS Home Page/Search/Images Explore Historical Images which may be easier to browse. The three volumes are the first three items on the film. Mainly Dutch language, although if the cemetery inscriptions were originally in English, the transcriptions also are in English. Each volume contains an index of names which appears at the beginning of each filmed volume (although from the page numbering probably comes from the back of the book). Volume 1 1934. Volume 2 (1936) commences image no. 258, and Volume 3 (1938) commences image 516, ending image 773. There are generally two printed pages per image. The FamilySearch microfilm does not include Volume 4 (1939) which is however available at the British Library, or was available on a USB stick to buy from IGV, and probably is still available, see below. The impression (subject to language difficulties) is that each additional volume contains new information which has become available since the previous edition.

Members have exclusive access to the Indisch Archief , a professional database with more than 2 million records with data that are not all publicly accessible. IGV also sells publications, including a USB stick of records from multiple sources. All four volumes of the book by Bloys van Treslong Prins, refer above, were previously included in the USB stick, and are thought to be still available in the listing dated 7 February 2023, but catalogued somewhat obscurely as GHG1GRAF.PDF, GHG2GRAF.PDF, GHG3GRAF.PDF, GHG4GRAF.PDF. The "Provisional search guide" refers to a published guide in the Dutch language Asal Oesoel, published by Centraal Bureau voor Genealogie en Familiegeschiedenis [CBG] [Central Bureau for Genealogy and Family History], available through the IGV online shop, with a 50% discount for IGV members.

During WW1 Julius Lauterbach was navigator on the German SMS Emden and subsequently was a prisoner in Singapore at Tangling prison camp page 95, and helped ferment dissatisfaction which led to the 1915 Singapore Mutiny, during which he escaped and fled, initially to Sumatra.

• Between 1966 and 1980, the War History Office of the National Defense College of Japan published the 102-volume Senshi Sōsho (War History Series). These volumes give a detailed account of the operations of the Imperial Japanese Army and the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Second World War. Describes the Japanese Navy’s role in the campaign to gain control over the Indonesian archipelago. It includes the first complete Japanese analysis of the Battle of the Java Sea, a much-debated battle that ended disastrously for the Allies and opened the way to Java for the Japanese.
